Five years ago, Elizabeth Ferrao found Women Who Code - an emerging nonprofit organization running meetups in San Francisco. The vibrant events were far more engaging than the theory of computer science, and in an instant a developer was born.
After relocating to NYC, Ferrao wondered where the community was? It's not the first story of disconnection we've heard during our recent visits to "the capital of the world." But it's Ferrao who is tackling the problem head-on, creating much-needed community for women in technology and addressing the pipeline problem for the next generation of female coders.
We caught up with Elizabeth (who is currently an entrepreneur-in-residence at Civic Hall) to hear more about the work she's doing on the ground, discuss why her pivot into product management was another exercise in claiming her power, and how to "break it down and build it."
